Students’ Performance Prediction Based on Rough Sets

Rough set theory is a new mathematical approach to imperfect knowledge. It was proposed by Pawlak in 1981. The benefit of rough set theory in data analysis is that it can easily find the reducts using approximations without need any preliminary or additional information about data. The proposed approach provides efficient algorithms for deducting unseen patterns in data. Due to this reason, we aimed to categorize the school student’s academic performance that took place in Portuguese school to find out valuable facts from the analyzed data. Since it is expected to get decision rules ROSE2 software was used to analyze student’s data in order to reduce the attributes without loss of information and to extract decision rules. The results of this study provide the related members and decision makers to reduce and prevent the poor performances of students by predicting them.
